ABIM - 23-25 October 2017 - The global biocontrol industry meeting
ABIM is the premier global meeting for the biocontrol industry and is internationally recognised as the global platform for the industry to network, discover and unveil new products, market opportunities and research areas. But as well as promoting biocontrol and networking it is the platform to liaise with and inform policy makers and regulators of the specific needs of our unique growth industry.
During the three days of the 11th conference, over 898 delegates from 48 countries representing 426 companies and organisations from all over the globe were present and exchanged experiences and obtained information on the latest products and developments on the world market. Two keynote speeches and one panel discussion enriched the programme. The scientific programme with 8 sessions with 29 presentations covered the latest developments in market development, regulatory affairs and novel products for plant protection. The exhibition was at the core of the congress, giving 59 companies excellent visibility.
The history of commercial mass production of natural enemies spans a period of roughly 120 years and has become a successful, environmentally and economically sound alternative for conventional pest control. For ABIM 2017 the two keynote speakers represent different aspects of classical biocontrol and will be presenting how their companies have helped change pest management practices; Monday - Paul Koppert and Tuesday - Ulrich (Ulli) Kuhlmann.
Dr Ulrich Kuhlmann, Executive Director, Global Operations, CABI
Ulrich Kuhlmann first joined CABI’s Switzerland centre in 1989 where he completed his MSc and PhD, together with the University of Kiel, in the field of agricultural classical biological control. In 1997, he was appointed as Head of CABI Switzerland’s Arthropod Biological Control research programme and became responsible for the development and management of several international agricultural classical biological research projects, as well as the supervision of numerous international MSc and PhD students. In 2010, Ulrich was appointed as Regional Director, CABI, Switzerland as well as Plantwise Programme Executive. Plantwise is CABI’s first global programme, which works in close partnership with relevant parties to strengthen national plant health systems from within, enabling countries to provide farmers with the knowledge they need to lose less and feed more. Plantwise is now CABI’s flagship programme following its success and impact in strengthening plant health systems and agricultural production in 34 target countries. Ulrich became CABI’s Executive Director, Global Operations in 2016, a strategic position that aims to foster collaborations between CABI centres and international partners and to develop new opportunities to improve agricultural production, alleviate poverty and enhance nutrition and food security. Ulrich is also a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and has been Co-Director of the CABI – Chinese Ministry of Agriculture Joint Laboratory of Bio-safety (CABI-MoA Joint Laboratory) since its establishment in 2008. This laboratory functions as a platform for research collaboration and technology transfer and as a centre of excellence for training and scientific exchanges. It has successfully implemented a number of international projects over the years. In 2012, Ulrich was honoured with the Chinese government’s Friendship Award for his many years of dedication to fostering cooperation between CABI and China in the area of sustainable agriculture.
Paul Koppert, Koppert Managing Director
With 50 years history to refer to, Koppert Managing Director, Paul will present ‘50 Years as a Company in Biocontrol’. A solid family firm, Koppert has grown from a Dutch enterprise to a truly international operation and has expanded it’s product offering from parasites and predators to a portfolio that now includes other macrobials and biostimulants. Paul will not only look back at the founding of Koppert and the years of endeavour leading up to the present day but consider the opportunities that still lie ahead.
