National Action Plans for Pesticide Reduction: The role of Biocontrol (150.7 KB)

    Panel discussion and public debate

Reducing pesticide use and risks in agriculture is a joint responsibility of policy makers, farmers, private sector and civil society. Biocontrol approaches and technologies have significantly advanced and can play an important role to achieve this objective. What needs to be done in order to enhance the use of alternative crop protection methods? What can farmers, researchers, biocontrol manufacturers, retailers, consumers and policy makers contribute?

    Panellists:

    • Eva Reinhard, Deputy Director, the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture FOAG
    • Vittorio Veronelli, Vice President, International Biocontrol Manufacturer Association IBMA
    • Manfred Bötsch, Head of Department of Sustainability and Quality Management at MIGROS Switzerland

8th Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting ABIM in Basel, Switzerland, 21.23 October 2013

At the 8th ABIM Conference in Basel, the prime international meeting of the biocontrol industry, novel and safe biological crop protection products have been presented and new trends in the global market were discussed.

The 8th Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM 2013) was held at the Congress Center Basel, Switzerland on 21-23 October 2013. The meeting is organised in cooperation by the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (IBMA) and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). ABIM provides an annual meeting place specifically adapted to the needs of the biocontrol industry

Plant protection with natural and biological systems allows for the sustainable production of healthy foods while refraining from the use of chemical pesticides. The biocontrol industry is based on many years of research and development.

During the three days of the last conference in 2013, over 670 delegates from more than 50 countries, representing more than 320 companies and organisations from all over the globe exchanged experience and obtained information on the latest products and developments on the world market. The vast majority of company representatives stated that they were highly satisfied with the outcome of the conference. In the scientific programme, 37 presentations covered the latest developments in market development, regulatory affairs and novel products for plant protection. In addition to the presentation, information was at display in stands in the exhibition hall. In the 7 professional group meetings (access exclusively to IBMA members) key issues of the industry were discussed and strategies common interest were developed.

2nd Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM) Lucerne, Switzerland October 22nd-23rd, 2007

At the ABIM-Lucerne Conference, the prime international meeting of the biocontrol industry, a southern German biocontrol company presented a natural antagonist for the dreaded fireblight. It is an alternative to the controversial antibiotic streptomycin.

(Lucerne, 22.10.2007) The 2nd Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting in Lucerne (ABIM-Lucerne Conference) witnessed the presentation of a natural antagonist of fireblight. It is a fungal preparation (Aureobasidium pullulans). In Germany, the new product, «Blossom-Protect» produced by the company «Bio-Protect», was found to be highly effective against fireblight and considerably more environmentally friendly than the controversial antibiotic streptomycin. «Bio-Protect», based in the Lake Constance region, is characteristic of a rapidly growing industry, developing innovative and ecologically sound, organic alternatives to synthetic pesticides.

The biological pest and disease control industry held its second meeting in Lucerne. Plant protection with natural and biological systems allows for the sustainable production of healthy foods while refraining from the use of chemical pesticides. The biocontrol industry is based on many years of research and development.

In cooperation with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association IBMA, the umbrella association of the biocontrol industry, held its 2nd Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting on 22–23 October at the KKL Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne. More than 300 participants from all over the globe exchanged experience and obtained information on the latest products and developments on the world market.

Questions concerning the licensing of biocontrol products were discussed and the US, South-East Asian, Indian and European markets analysed.

ABIM-Lucerne is sponsored by EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel (DG-Agri), the EU Enterprise Commissioner (DG-Enterprise), the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) as well as by the city of Lucerne.
